The Atlantic School of Theology (AST) is a small but mighty theological college tucked away in the peaceful surroundings of Nova Scotia in Canada. Established in 1922 as a result of the ecumenical movement that sweeps across pre-World War One Canada, AST is positioned in the heart of Halifax, originally as an outgrowth of the Church of England in Nova Scotia.
AST is in a unique urban setting, offering a distinctively Christian educational experience that aims to integrate learning, spiritual nurture, and practical experience. From its foundation, AST had its growth parallel with the emergence and development of the city of Halifax, which has been a vital context for studentsâ?? formation. Working together in tandem, both city and school have served to shape and nurture lives of faith and service.
AST students have the opportunity to pursue a unique Master of Divinity degree which combines a solid academic foundation in biblical studies, theology, and ministry with emphasis on ecumenism, mission, and diaspora contexts. Within the program, the professors bring to the class an expansive blend of theological perspectives from a variety of backgrounds, including Christian, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, Islamic, and Indigenous spiritualities.
Course offerings include courses on Bible, spirituality, and social justice; preaching; church management; and practical skills in church administration and leadership. In addition to this, students can choose to specialize in diaconal ministry, spiritual direction, youth ministry, or for those with backgrounds in the ministry, there is a doctoral program offered.
