The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is a leader in distributed medical and health education and rural health innovation in Canada. Located in the Northern Ontario Region of Canada, the school is splitting its campus between two university cities â?? Thunder Bay and Sudbury. NOSM is a joint school of the Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury.
NOSM was established in May 2005 as a result of an innovative partnership between health and educational organizations, as well as the governments of Canada and Ontario. Its innovative medical education program and research initiatives are focused on the particular health needs of the people of Northern Ontario.
NOSM offers a four-year MD Program, an Interprofessional Education Program, and two residency programs- the Postgraduate Medical Education Program in Family Medicine and Northern Ontario Rural Residency (NOREP). NOSM also offers an array of research-based programs in areas such as health services, population health, and rural health.
The MD program starts with a two-year pre-clinical education, completed in either Sudbury or Thunder Bay. After successfully completing the pre-clinical program, students start their hands-on training in medical laboratories, hospitals, and health care agencies across 11 sites across Northern Ontario. Many students are also paired with community clinicians in their home communities for a more comprehensive learning experience.
